Teen Therapy and Counseling in Mandarin

Outpatient therapy and counseling for Mandarin teens, with PHP, IOP, and OP care about fifteen minutes from home.

For many Mandarin families, the search for help starts late at night, with a parent typing “teen therapy near me” and carrying a worry they have not yet said out loud. If that is where you are, you are in the right place, and you are far from alone.

HavenRise Academy sits just north of Mandarin in Jacksonville’s Deerwood Park, about fifteen minutes up I-295 or San Jose Boulevard, so your son or daughter can get specialized care without a long cross-town drive cutting into the school day or family dinner.

We are an outpatient mental health program built specifically for adolescents in grades 6 through 12, and that focus shapes everything we do. A Mandarin teen who is wrestling with anxiety, low mood, or emotions that have begun to spill into school and home is not a smaller version of an adult patient. The way we assess, the therapies we use, and the way our groups are run are all designed around how teenagers actually think, feel, and heal.

Outpatient care close to home

Because our care is outpatient, your teen lives at home throughout treatment and stays connected to the people and routines that ground them. There are no overnight stays. Families come to us from across Mandarin, from the San Jose Boulevard corridor down toward Julington Creek, and the drive up I-295 or Old St. Augustine Road is short enough that a morning session or a full program day stays realistic, even for busy households where both parents work.

Our programs for Mandarin teens

We offer a full continuum of outpatient care, so the level of support can match what your teen actually needs and shift as they make progress.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is our most structured level of care, a full day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for teens who need consistent daily support to stabilize and build momentum. Because that is a full school day away from the classroom, we provide academic support on-site so your teen does not fall behind while they focus on getting well.

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets several mornings a week, blending group and individual work into a focused block of time. Mornings are intentional, letting your teen get real treatment and still keep a foot in school and home life. The groups build on one another, moving from connection and goal setting into emotional awareness and then practical skills like stress management and communication.

Our Outpatient Program (OP) offers weekly therapy and counseling, whether your teen is starting with a lighter level of support or stepping down after PHP or IOP to protect their progress. Many teens move between these levels over time, and we help you choose the right one at each stage.

Our approach to treating teens

There is no single therapy that fits every teen, so we do not force one. We start by understanding your child, then draw on several evidence-based approaches, often in combination, to meet them where they are.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

DBT is a cornerstone of our work and one of the most well-researched approaches for teens who feel emotions intensely. It teaches four practical skill sets: tolerating distress without making things worse, regulating big emotions, navigating relationships, and staying present through mindfulness. For a teenager who feels like their feelings run the show, these are concrete tools they can use in the moment, not just things to talk about.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

So much of what weighs on a teen lives in their thoughts, in beliefs like “I am going to fail,” “nobody likes me,” or “I am broken.” CBT helps them notice those patterns and replace them with more realistic, compassionate ones. When paired with DBT skills, it gives teens both the insight to understand their feelings and the means to respond differently.

Trauma-informed care

When trauma is part of the picture, pushing a teen to talk before they are ready can do harm, so we do not. Every member of our team, from therapists to the front desk, works from a trauma-informed model that puts safety, trust, and a teen’s sense of control first.

For teens who need it, we use Trauma-Focused CBT, the gold standard for adolescents, to gently correct the beliefs trauma leaves behind, along with somatic work that helps them reconnect with their bodies and release the tension they hold.

Therapy alongside peers, not in isolation

One of the most powerful moments in treatment is when a teen realizes they are not the only one. Shame thrives in silence, and much of what teens carry, whether anxiety, self-harm, or the sense of being broken, convinces them they are alone in it.

Our groups are age-specific, for grades 6 through 12, with no adults in the room, so teens can lower their guard, practice new skills in real time, and hear their own experiences reflected back by peers who understand them. For many families, this turns out to be the part of the program their teen values most.

Family healing alongside your teen

A teen does not struggle in a vacuum, and recovery does not happen in one either. We bring parents into the work, not to assign blame, but to lower the temperature at home and rebuild connection.

Often, what looks like defiance is a skills gap rather than a motivation problem, and your son or daughter may simply lack the brakes to stop big emotions from taking over. When the whole household learns the same language and skills, the steadiness your teen builds in our groups has somewhere to land when they walk back through the front door.

What treatment looks like day to day

Most families want to know what they are actually walking into, so here is the shape of it. Care begins with a conversation and an assessment, where we get to know your teen and recommend the level of care that fits. From there, a program day combines group work, individual therapy, and hands-on skill practice, with PHP filling the school day and IOP holding to the mornings.

You will not be on the outside looking in, since families meet regularly with the care team to review progress together and plan the step down to less intensive care as your teen stabilizes. You can get a fuller sense of a typical day and how school fits alongside treatment.

What we help Mandarin teens work through

Families come to us when a teen is carrying more than they can manage on their own. We support teens through anxiety, depression, self harm, trauma and PTSD, emotional and behavioral dysregulation, and school refusal. Whether your daughter has slowly stopped doing the things she used to love or your son has started shutting down or lashing out at home, there is a path forward, and we will help you find it.

Signs it may be time to reach out

Many Mandarin parents wait, hoping a rough patch will pass on its own, and sometimes it does. It may be time for more structured support when the changes stop feeling temporary, including grades sliding, a pulling away from friends and once loved activities, escalating anger or shutdowns at home, missed school, or outright refusal to go, or anything pointing to self-harm.

It is also worth a call if weekly therapy alone no longer seems sufficient. If you are not sure, our is my teen a good fit guide can help, and so can a short conversation with our team. There is no wrong time to ask.

Why Mandarin families choose HavenRise

Mandarin is a close-knit, school-proud community, and parents here tend to do their homework before they trust anyone with their child. We welcome that. Our proximity is part of the appeal, since a fifteen-minute drive makes consistent attendance far easier than a program across the city.

So is our singular focus on adolescents, our blended and evidence-based clinical approach, and a calm, welcoming space in Deerwood Park that feels nothing like a hospital. Families value the discretion too, knowing their teen is cared for thoughtfully and privately.

Working with Mandarin schools

We know that pulling a teen out of the classroom raises real questions, especially for families connected to Mandarin High School, Mandarin Middle School, and Twin Lakes Academy Middle, as well as those at Christ’s Church Academy or Bolles.

Our team helps coordinate excused absences and works to keep your teen’s education on track, with academic and school support built into our PHP day so the return to a full class schedule is as smooth as possible. The goal is always for your teen to come back steadier, not behind.

Insurance and getting started

We work with families to make care accessible and will walk you through coverage and options up front, so cost is one less unknown during a stressful time. You can review the details on our insurance and financing page. When you are ready, reaching out is simple, and there is no pressure, just a conversation about your teen and what they need.

Questions Mandarin parents ask

How far is HavenRise from Mandarin?

About fifteen minutes for most Mandarin neighborhoods, a straight shot up I-295 or San Jose Boulevard to our Deerwood Park location.

Will my teen fall behind in school?

We build academic support into the PHP day and coordinate with your teen’s school on excused absences, so they can keep up with coursework while they focus on getting well.

Can my teen stay enrolled at their school during PHP?

Yes. Your teen remains enrolled at Mandarin High, Mandarin Middle, or wherever they attend. We support continuity so the transition back to a full class schedule is smooth.

What is the difference between PHP, IOP, and OP?

PHP is a full day program, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for teens who need the most structure. IOP meets several mornings a week and leaves the rest of the day for school and home. OP is weekly therapy and counseling. Many teens step from one level into the next as they improve.

Do you only use DBT?

No. DBT is a cornerstone, but we combine it with CBT, trauma-focused approaches, family therapy, and peer group work, matching the methods to what your teen actually needs.

Are the groups only for teens?

Yes. Our therapy groups are age specific, grades 6 through 12 with no adults in the room, which helps teens open up and practice new skills with peers who understand what they are going through.

Do you involve parents in treatment?

We do. Family involvement is part of the work, and we coach parents on lowering conflict and supporting their teen so progress holds at home, not just in session.

Do you take our insurance?

We work with many plans and will verify your coverage and explain your options before you commit to anything. Start on our insurance and financing page or call us directly.

How soon can we get started?

Often quickly. The first step is a conversation, and we will move at the pace that is right for your family.
