Teen Behavioral & Emotional Dysregulation Treatment
Helping teens who feel “out of control” learn to manage their emotions and reactions.
At HavenRise Academy, we know that behavior is communication. A teen who is acting out is often overwhelmed by emotions they don’t have the skills to manage. We help adolescents (Grades 6–12) move from chaos to calm.
Does your home feel like a battlefield?
If you are constantly “walking on eggshells” to avoid setting off an explosion, you are living with Emotional Dysregulation.
For many parents in Jacksonville, this is the most exhausting aspect of raising a teen. It isn’t just “moodiness.” It’s screaming matches that last for hours. It’s holes punched in walls. It’s suspension from school for fighting or defiance. It’s the terrifying feeling that you cannot keep your child—or your family—safe from their outbursts.
Is It "Just Being a Teen" or Dysregulation?
All teens push boundaries. However, Emotional Dysregulation goes beyond typical rebellion. It is an inability to control emotional responses, leading to reactions that are far more intense than the situation warrants.
If your teen is struggling with the following, they likely need professional intervention:
- Explosive Anger: Rage that goes from 0 to 100 in seconds over minor triggers (like being asked to do homework).
- Physical Aggression: Throwing objects, slamming doors, or threatening family members.
- School Disciplinary Issues: Frequent detentions, suspensions, or expulsion for defiance or fighting.
- Impulsivity: Acting without thinking of the consequences (risky driving, substance use, shoplifting).
- Inability to Self-Soothe: Once they are upset, they cannot calm down for hours or days.
- Physical Symptoms: Chronic headaches, stomach aches, or mysterious pains with no medical cause.
Clinical Insight: These behaviors are often symptoms of underlying issues like ADHD, Mood Disorders, or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). We treat the root cause, not just the behavior.
The Skill Gap - Why Punishments Aren't Working
If you are reading this, you have probably tried everything: grounding, taking away the phone, shouting, pleading. And likely, none of it has worked.
That is because dysregulation is often a skills deficit, not a motivation deficit.
Your teen isn’t necessarily choosing to be difficult; they lack the neurological “brakes” to stop their emotions from taking over.
- At HavenRise, we use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
- We don’t just talk about feelings; we teach specific skills.
- We teach Distress Tolerance (how to survive a crisis without making it worse) and Emotional Regulation (how to identify and name a feeling before acting on it).

Structured Treatment for Behavioral Change
Weekly therapy is rarely enough for severe behavioral issues because the “crisis” happens at home or school, not in the therapist’s office.
We offer structured, frequency-based care to disrupt negative patterns.
Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- For families in crisis.
- If your teen is currently suspended, refusing to follow any rules at home, or engaging in unsafe behavior, this full-day program provides the intensive structure they need. We provide a “reset” button for the family dynamic.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
- For continued growth.
- Teens practice their new emotional regulation skills in the real world (school/home) while returning to us several times a week to process successes and failures.
Repairing the Family Dynamic
Behavioral issues don’t just affect the teen; they traumatize the whole family. Siblings may feel unsafe or neglected. Parents often feel pitted against each other.
We require Family Involvement as part of our treatment for behavioral issues.
- We help you establish clear, consistent boundaries that are enforceable.
- We teach you how to de-escalate a situation rather than adding fuel to the fire.
- We help repair the trust that has been broken by months (or years) of conflict.
A Note on Safety & Exclusion
While we specialize in helping teens with behavioral challenges, safety is our priority.
HavenRise Academy is an open, voluntary therapeutic environment. We are not a lockdown facility or a juvenile detention center.
- We cannot accept teens who are currently physically violent towards others or require physical restraint to be safe.
- If your teen is in acute crisis (active violence), we can help guide you to the appropriate acute inpatient stabilization unit before they step down to our program.
Frequently Asked Questions
My teen has ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder). Can you help?
Yes. ODD is often a manifestation of anxiety or rigid thinking. We work with ODD by giving the teen a sense of control through choices rather than commands, while maintaining firm boundaries.
Will this go on their permanent record?
Mental health treatment is confidential under HIPAA. While we coordinate with schools for excused absences, your teen’s privacy is protected.
What if they refuse to go?
This is common with behavioral issues. We recommend a “united front” approach with parents. Often, framing it as a non-negotiable medical appointment (“We are going to see a doctor to help with the stress in the house”) works better than asking for permission.
From Conflict to Connection
You don’t have to live in a war zone. Your teen can learn to manage their emotions, and your home can be peaceful again.
