Individual Therapy for Teens
Every teen who comes to HavenRise Academy has one relationship at the center of their care, the one they build with their individual therapist. Individual therapy is where your teen can say the things they cannot say anywhere else, be taken seriously without an audience, and work through what sits underneath the behavior everyone else sees.
We work with adolescents in grades 6 through 12 in a fully outpatient setting, and one on one therapy anchors every program we offer.
What individual therapy is
Individual therapy for teens is regular, private, one on one time between your son or daughter and a licensed clinician. For many teenagers, it is the first place they experience an adult who listens without judging, lecturing, or rushing to fix. That relationship becomes the foundation for everything else, because a teen who feels safe with their therapist will go places in session that they would never go otherwise.
How individual therapy helps
Sessions are tailored to your teen rather than following a script. Our clinicians draw on evidence based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and trauma focused methods, matching the approach to what your teen is working through. Individual therapy supports teens dealing with anxiety, depression, self-harm, trauma, and the emotional ups and downs that can make daily life feel unmanageable.
How individual and group therapy work together
At HavenRise, individual therapy rarely works alone. One on one sessions are where your teen goes deepest, and group therapy is where they practice what they are learning alongside peers who understand. Individual sessions also give your teen’s therapist a clear view of how they are progressing, so the whole treatment plan stays tuned to what your teen needs.
Individual therapy within our programs
In our Partial Hospitalization Program and Intensive Outpatient Program, individual sessions are built into each week of care. In our Outpatient Program, weekly individual therapy is often the core of treatment, whether your teen is starting there or stepping down after a more intensive level of support.
Care built around your teen
Fit matters more in individual therapy than anywhere else, and we take matching seriously. Our clinicians work exclusively with adolescents, and they know how to earn the trust of a teen who has already decided therapy is not for them. If your teen has struggled to connect with a therapist before, that does not mean therapy cannot work. Often it means the fit was not right yet.
Insurance and getting started
Many insurance plans cover therapy for adolescents who meet clinical criteria, and our team will help you verify your coverage and understand your options before you commit to anything. You can learn more on our insurance and financing page or simply call us with your questions.
Questions parents ask
What is individual therapy for teens?
Individual therapy is private, one on one treatment between a teen and a licensed clinician. Sessions are tailored to your teen's needs and draw on evidence based approaches like CBT, DBT, and trauma focused therapy.
What happens in the first session?
Early sessions are mostly about getting comfortable. The therapist gets to know your teen, what is going on, and what they want out of therapy, and your teen gets a feel for the person across from them. Nothing heavy is forced before trust is built.
Will the therapist tell me what my teen talks about?
Sessions are private, which is a big part of why teens open up, and safety concerns are always shared with parents. You will be kept meaningfully involved in your teen's progress and treatment plan, without your teen feeling reported on.
How is individual therapy different from group therapy?
Individual sessions are one on one and move at your teen's own depth and pace. Group sessions build skills and connection alongside peers. At HavenRise the two work together, each reinforcing the other.
What types of therapy are used in individual sessions?
Our clinicians draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and trauma focused approaches, choosing and blending methods based on what your teen is working through.
How often will my teen meet with their therapist?
It depends on their level of care. Teens in our PHP and IOP have individual sessions built into each week alongside group work, while outpatient teens typically meet weekly. Frequency always follows your teen's needs.
